Multicultural Affairs

Pre-Orientation Program

Each year, the Office of Multicultural Affairs implements a program for incoming first-year "American students of color" to assist them in making a smooth transition into the University community.

This three-day program, which is staffed by a variety of upper-level students, precedes the general University orientation, and helps participants learn about campus resources.  The primary objective is to support students in  maximizing their collegiate experience.

The format of the program includes lively student-led discussions, skits showcasing campus life, and faculty and staff led presentations.  There are also off-campus outings that both introduce students to the wider Richmond community and provide lasting opportunities to forge friendships.

A sampling of topics typically included in the Program are noted below:

  • Making the transition from high school to college
  • Strategies for academic success
  • Decoding the professor
  • Recognizing and making use of university resources
  • Conflict management
  • Male and female relationships
