Support Network

Over the years, professional staff, dedicated alumni, and a team of student leaders have initiated several support groups that serve as venues for reflection, personal growth, and validation.  These groups often become important resources that help students rely upon one another.

Currently, the Office facilitates the following groups:

Contact us if you have interest in either participating in a group or suggesting a new one.

Women’s Group

The office facilitates a Women’s Group where students regularly meet and engage in conversations about subjects that affect them academically, emotionally, and spiritually as women on the University’s campus.

The discussion topics are student-selected and often student-led.  Past topics have included discussions regarding self-esteem, self -awareness, conflict resolution, family relations, and male/female relationships.

Through the Group, participants join in ways where they are collectively important sources of both affirmation, and support, particularly during times of difficulty.

Men’s Connection

The Men’s Connection provides an opportunity for male students to interact with other males who share the common experience of being under-represented students on campus.

During their meetings participants are able to develop friendships, engage in lively conversations and debates, and form strong sources of support .

The Connection helps participants define their own values and give voice to their experiences as students of color.

Tear Soup

The Tear Soup group is designed to support students who are struggling with loss.  In some cases, that loss may be directly connected to the death of a family member or “ significant” other.  In other cases, the loss may be centered around a devastating illness or other source of unhappiness.

Facilitated by two professional staff, and comprised of students facing similar issues related to grieving, this group,   relies upon the experience of its student to help one another cope with loss, change, and related anxiety.

Individualized Advising

The Office professionals are available to meet regularly and on an individualized basis with students to support their  retention and overall well-being. These meetings typically focus on a student’s academic performance and general adjustment to the campus community, as well as articulated special needs.
